How to Avoid Spam Filters

In this post, we outline five tips to avoid spam filters and make sure your email ends up in the inbox and opened.

Email marketing is an essential tactic for many entrepreneurs. If executed well, it’s an effective mechanism for gaining traction and generating interest among customers (both current or potential). However, if you’re not careful, your emails can get marked as spam and end up in the spam folder.

Conversely, spam is the ugly step-sister of the email process. Email spam filters are a curious thing. Simply reusing the same content or overuse of certain keywords can be enough to get your emails flagged and caught by spam filters.

How do you avoid spam filters? What are some ways to construct your emails to make sure your message gets delivered to the right inboxes and seen by your intended audience?

Here are a handful of tips for better emails:

1. Avoid excessive punctuation and colors.

Lots of exclamation points (!!!!!!!) and excess periods within your subject lines, as well as using different colors, are more prone to get caught by spam filters. Make sure to avoid using any of these. Plus, your emails will look cleaner and more professional.

2. Avoid false claims.

Making bold claims like “Make Money FAST” or “100% Return on your Investment” as subject lines also make your emails look like spam. Emails with subject lines like these will end up in the spam folder.

3. Know the stats!

Different industries have different metrics regarding successful open rates, bounce rate etc. Does your campaign stack up against your competitors? Mail Chimp has compiled an awesome list of many industry standards  available here.

4. Follow the CAN-SPAM Act.

The CAN-SPAM Act is legislation in the United States (and Canada has their own version) that governs email communications. There are a number of things emails are required to have. Failure to follow these rules can result in massive fines or penalties. The ClickBank risk and compliance team carefully monitors this act and will investigate any reported spam claims.

5. Make it personal.

Including variable data can help your email have more weight. Instead of saying “Dear Client” instead opt for “Dear Mike” or “Hey Suzy.” Many email service providers make it easy to insert these fields and it helps increase your open rates, especially when including a first name as part of a subject line.

With better emails comes better visibility. And better visibility leads to better sales.
