What is content marketing?

When a potential or current customer wants to find out more about something, they turn to the web and search for information. When they can find the answers to their questions on your website, it builds a foundational trust and often spurs them to find out more about what you have to offer.

Content marketing is an opportunity for you to educate your readers about your products or services through the use of articles, blog posts, videos, webinars, eBooks, images and more. Instead of being product-driven like traditional advertising, content marketing is customer-driven.

Who should I create content for?

Before creating a strategy, you need to think about who your target audience is and how your content will appeal to them.  Identify key demographics and create a persona who you can write to. The persona may include age, gender, marital status, location and occupation of your target.

Also think about the pain points that this persona is experiencing. What problem(s) are they experiencing and how can your product and your content address and solve them?

Once you know who your target audience is, create an editorial calendar around your strategy.  Detail topics you want to cover throughout the week. Only choose topics that you feel comfortable writing about.

It is important that your content calendar address all target groups and all phases of the sales process. Once you have a strategy in place, plan to include execution in your daily tasks or hire a writer who will help you create great content.

How do I maintain a content marketing strategy?

Just starting a blog isn’t enough to bring traffic or generate sales. Consistency is critical. Try to post on a regular basis, whether it’s weekly or biweekly in order to build up a reader base and rank higher in the SERPs. When people take the time to comment, make sure you interact with them to build a feeling of trust.

Lastly, have metrics in place to gauge the effectiveness of your content marketing campaign. Use Google Analytics to track pageviews and social referrals as well as engagement metrics like bounce rate and time on site.
